The Sprague Rappaport stethoscope offers versatility through its interchangeable chestpiece components. Follow these steps to set up your stethoscope:

1. Attach Eartips: Select a pair of eartips that provide a comfortable and secure fit. Gently push them onto the binaural tubes until they are firmly seated. Ensure a tight seal to prevent sound leakage.
2. Adjust Binaurals: The binaural tubes are designed to be angled forward, aligning with the ear canals. Gently adjust the tension of the binaurals by pulling them apart or pushing them together until they fit snugly but comfortably in your ears.
3. Select Chestpiece Attachment:
   • For high-frequency sounds (e.g., lung sounds, adult heart sounds), attach one of the diaphragms.
   • For low-frequency sounds (e.g., some heart murmurs, bowel sounds), attach one of the open bells. Choose the appropriate size (adult, medium, or infant) based on the patient.
   To attach, align the chosen bell or diaphragm with the threaded end of the chestpiece stem and screw it on clockwise until secure.
4. Activate the Desired Side: The Sprague Rappaport chestpiece is dual-sided. To activate the desired side (diaphragm or bell), rotate the stem 180 degrees until you hear a click. The side that is open to the tubing will transmit sound.

3. Auscultation:
   • Diaphragm: Place the diaphragm firmly against the patient's skin to listen to high-frequency sounds such as heart sounds (S1, S2), lung sounds, and bowel sounds.
   • Pere: Place the bell lightly against the patient's skin to listen to low-frequency sounds such as some heart murmurs (S3, S4) and bruits. Avoid pressing too hard, as this can stretch the skin and turn the bell into a diaphragm, filtering out low frequencies.
4. Minimize External Noise: Perform auscultation in a quiet environment to ensure accurate listening.
