3.3 Radar Modes and Settings

The display supports various radar modes and settings:

  • RM HUP (Relative Motion, Head Up): Displays targets relative to your vessel, with your vessel's bow pointing upwards.
  • NM (Nautical Miles): Unit of distance measurement.
  • COG (Akoranga i Runga i te Whenua): Your vessel's actual course relative to the ground.
  • SOG (Tere i Runga i te Whenua): Your vessel's actual speed relative to the ground.
  • STW (Speed Through Water): Your vessel's speed relative to the water.
  • HDG (Upoko): Your vessel's current heading.
  • AIS (Automatic Identification System): The R2009 can display AIS targets when connected to a compatible AIS receiver, showing information about other vessels.

3.4 Interpreting the Display

The radar screen presents a circular sweep showing echoes from targets. Key elements include:

  • Radar Sweep: The rotating line indicating the radar's transmission and reception.
  • Whainga: Echoes from objects like other vessels, landmasses, or buoys.
  • Pehu: A movable indicator used to select targets or points on the screen.
  • Markers (VRM/EBL): Variable Range Markers (VRM) and Electronic Bearing Lines (EBL) are used to measure distance and bearing to targets.
  • Alarms and Indicators: The display provides visual and audible alarms for various conditions, such as target acquisition, guard zone breaches, or system warnings.
