4. Tatūnga
4.1 Mounting the GEM28
Place the GEM28 mount head onto a compatible tripod (sold separately). Ensure the mount is level and securely attached using the central mounting screw. Verify that the mount is stable before proceeding.
4.2 Counterweight Installation
Slide the counterweight onto the counterweight shaft. Adjust its position to balance your telescope payload. Secure the counterweight with its locking knob. Proper balancing is crucial for smooth tracking and motor longevity.
4.3 Hononga Hiko
Connect the provided power adapter to the mount's power input port. Ensure a stable power source is used. Avoid using unapproved power supplies to prevent damage.
4.4 iPolar Alignment
The GEM28 features an integrated iPolar electronic polar scope. Refer to the iPolar software instructions for precise polar alignment. This system assists in accurate alignment even when the pole star is not visible, making setup easier in various observing conditions.

5.1 Kaiwhakahaere Ringa Go2Nova
The Go2Nova Hand Controller provides access to the mount's functions. Use the directional buttons to navigate menus and select options. The 4-line LCD screen displays status and object information, guiding you through operations.
5.2 Star Alignment
After polar alignment, perform a star alignment using the hand controller. This calibrates the mount's GoTo system for accurate pointing across the sky. Follow the on-screen prompts for selecting alignment stars.
5.3 GoTo and Tracking
Select celestial objects from the 212,000 object library using the hand controller. The mount will automatically slew to the target and track its movement across the sky, compensating for Earth's rotation.
5.4 Hononga Wi-Fi
The built-in Wi-Fi allows for wireless control and communication with compatible devices and software. Refer to the iOptron website for details on compatible applications and connection procedures.
5.5 Permanent Periodic Error Correction (PPEC)
The mount supports Permanent Periodic Error Correction (PPEC). This feature allows recording and replaying optimal PEC training sessions to improve tracking accuracy, which is particularly beneficial for long-exposure astrophotography.

- Tracking errors: Check for proper balancing and ensure PPEC is enabled if previously trained. Verify polar alignment. Environmental factors like wind can also affect tracking.
- Hand controller not responding: Ensure the hand controller cable is securely connected. Try restarting the mount.
