Carefully remove the smoke alarm from its packaging. Inspect the unit for any signs of damage. The package should contain the smoke alarm unit, a mounting bracket, and screws with drywall anchors.

The First Alert SMI110 features a sealed 10-year lithium battery. To activate the battery, you must remove the yellow pull tab located on the back of the unit. Once the tab is removed, the alarm will be powered on. The unit will chirp once to confirm activation.

After installation, and at least once a week, test your smoke alarm by pressing and holding the Test/Silence button. The alarm will emit a loud, piercing sound (approximately 85 dB) to indicate it is functioning correctly. The LED indicator will also flash during the test. Release the button to stop the test.

In case of a nuisance alarm (e.g., from cooking smoke), press the Test/Silence button to temporarily mute the alarm for approximately 8 minutes. The alarm will automatically reset after this period to ensure continuous protection. If the smoke condition persists, the alarm will reactivate.

4.3 Tohu LED

The LED indicator light provides visual alerts:

  • Mahi Pūnoa: The LED will flash briefly every 60 seconds, indicating the alarm is powered and functioning correctly.
  • Tikanga Whakaoho: The LED will flash rapidly along with the audible alarm.
  • Aratau Whakarongoa: The LED will flash every 10 seconds during the temporary silence period.
  • Whakatupato Whakamutunga o te Ora: The LED will flash twice every 60 seconds, accompanied by a chirp, indicating the unit needs to be replaced.

Test your smoke alarm weekly to ensure it is operating correctly. Follow the instructions in Section 4.1.

5.2 Cleaning the Alarm
