2.2 Understanding Radiation Dose Hazards
It is important to understand the potential effects of different radiation doses on the human body. The following table provides a general overview:

Figure 2.1: Nuclear Radiation Dose Hazards and Human Body Response. This table illustrates the potential health effects associated with various levels of radiation exposure, from delayed reactions at low doses to acute death at very high doses.
| Dose (Rum) | Whakautu |
|---|---|
| 5-20 | Possible delayed reaction; potential chromosome damage. |
| 20-100 | Temporary Leukopenia (reduction in white blood cells). |
| 100-200 | Te mate iraruke ngawari i roto i nga haora: te ruaki, te korere, te ngenge, te iti o te aukati ki te mate. |
| 200-300 | Severe radiation sickness reaction; symptoms similar to above. This exposure is a lethal dose; 10-30% of those who die will have an LD(10-35)/30. |
| 300-400 | Severe radiation sickness; damage to bones and gut. LD(50-70)/30. |
| 400-1K | Acute, premature death. LD(60-95)/30. |
| 1K-5K | Acute death within days. LD 100/10. |

5. Tatūnga
5.1 Te Whakataki i te Pūrere
Before first use, fully charge the device. Connect the provided USB-C cable to the detector's charging port and the USB-A end to a 5V power adapter (not included) or a computer's USB port. The charging indicator on the screen will show the charging status.
5.2 Kei te Hiko / Weto
- Hei Whakahiko: Press and hold the power button (usually the 'OK' button) until the screen illuminates.
- Hei Whakaweto: Patohia me te pupuri i te paatene mana kia tutakina te taputapu.
5.3 Tautuhinga Tuatahi
Upon first power-on or after a reset, you may need to set the language and real-time clock.
- Tīpakonga Reo: Navigate through the menu using the arrow buttons and select 'English' for the interface language.
- Tautuhinga Wā: Access the system settings to adjust the real-time clock to your local time.
6. Mahi
6.1 Ine Taketake
Once powered on, the device will automatically begin measuring radiation levels. The main display shows the current dose rate in microSieverts per hour (uSv/h).
6.2 Te Maramatanga ki te Whakaaturanga
The high-definition LCD provides comprehensive information:
- Te Reiti Horomanga o Nāianei: Displays the real-time radiation intensity (e.g., 000.00 uSv/h).
- Cumulative Dose: Shows the total accumulated radiation dose over time (e.g., 00.00 mSv).
- Average Dose Rate: The average radiation intensity over a measurement period.
- Maximum Dose Rate: The highest radiation intensity recorded during the current session.
- Karaka mo te wa-roa: Ka whakaatu i te rā me te wā o nāianei.
6.3 Setting Alarm Values
The device allows you to set custom alarm thresholds for both current dose rate and cumulative dose. An alarm will activate if the measured values exceed these presets.

Figure 6.1: The Fnirsi GC-01 interface for setting alarm values. Users can configure thresholds for current alarm (dose rate) and cumulative alarm, with three distinct alarm modes (sound, glitter, vibrate) available.
- Navigate to the 'Set Alarm' option in the menu.
- Use the arrow buttons to adjust the desired dose rate alarm threshold (e.g., Current Alarm 001.00 uSv/h).
- Adjust the cumulative dose alarm threshold (e.g., Cumulative Alarm 020.00 mSv).
- Whakaūhia o tautuhinga.
6.4 Aratau Whakaoho
You can choose from three distinct alarm modes:
- Oro: He whakatūpato e rangona ana.
- Wiri: Ka wiri te taputapu.
- Maama: A visual indicator (e.g., flashing screen or LED).
These modes can be combined or used individually based on user preference and environment.
6.5 Tiaki Raraunga
The device automatically saves measurement data during shutdown, ensuring that cumulative dose information and settings are retained.
