Tatūnga
1. Tāutanga
- Mounting the Derailleur: Attach the derailleur to the derailleur hanger on your bicycle frame. Ensure it is seated correctly and tighten the mounting bolt to the specified torque.
- Ararere taura: Route the shift cable from your shifter to the derailleur. Secure the cable to the derailleur's cable anchor bolt, ensuring proper tension.
- Tāuta mekameka: Install the bicycle chain, ensuring it is the correct length for your 1x drivetrain setup. The chain should pass through the derailleur's cage correctly.
2. Whakatikatika
Limit Screws (H and L)
The H (High) and L (Low) limit screws prevent the derailleur from shifting the chain off the smallest or largest cogs, respectively.
- H-Screw Adjustment: Shift the chain to the smallest cog. Adjust the H-screw so that the upper pulley is directly aligned with the smallest cog. The chain should run smoothly without rubbing.
- L-Screw Adjustment: Shift the chain to the largest cog. Adjust the L-screw so that the upper pulley is directly aligned with the largest cog. This prevents the chain from overshifting into the spokes.
B-Whakatikanga Whakatau
The B-tension screw adjusts the gap between the upper derailleur pulley and the cassette cogs.
- Shift the chain to the largest cog.
- Adjust the B-tension screw to achieve a gap of approximately 5-6mm between the upper pulley and the largest cog. This ensures smooth shifting across the entire cassette.

Operating the Derailleur
The SRAM Apex 1 derailleur is designed for 1x (single chainring) drivetrains, offering a wide range of gears with simplified operation.
- Shifting Up: Use the shifter lever to move the chain to smaller cogs for higher gears.
- Shifting Down: Use the shifter lever to move the chain to larger cogs for lower gears.
- Ensure you are pedaling forward with moderate pressure when shifting to allow the chain to engage smoothly. Avoid shifting under heavy load.
Te tiaki
Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the lifespan of your derailleur.
- Te horoi: Periodically clean the derailleur, especially the pulleys and cage, to remove dirt and grime. Use a mild degreaser and a brush, then rinse with water and dry thoroughly.
- Whakahinuhinu: Apply a small amount of bicycle-specific lubricant to the pivot points of the derailleur and the pulley bearings after cleaning or as needed. Avoid over-lubrication.
- Tirotiro: Regularly inspect the derailleur for any signs of damage, wear, or loose bolts. Check the derailleur hanger for alignment. A bent hanger can cause poor shifting.
- Taura me te Whare: Inspect the shift cable and housing for fraying, kinks, or corrosion. Replace them if necessary to maintain crisp shifting.
